2015 Results Round-Up

Perhaps last summer may not have delivered the weather that many of us had hoped for, but clients of Ultimate Sails were busy on the water, getting the very best from their boats and their new sails.

We've put together a brief round-up of some of the best of your results from the season here. Apologies to those of you who we have missed on this roll of honour; do feel free to let us know about your results so that we can be sure to include a mention for you and your crew in our next newsletter.

Panerai British Classic Week

Now in its 12th year, the annual Regatta of the British Classic Yacht Club not only attracts entries from these shores but also regularly from Europe and occasionally from Canada. The regatta is perfect for classic boat enthusiasts to enjoy some fantastic racing and to get together with like-minded individuals with the same appreciation of owning a classic boat.

The regatta, which is part of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, has been held every year since the America’s Cup Jubilee was held in Cowes back in 2001.

The 2015 regatta (which took place from the 18th to the 25th July) enjoyed a huge entry this year with many classic yachts coming from around the globe to race here in the Solent.

BCYC Commodore David Murrin’s Cetewayo claimed the Corinthian Cup for Class 2. Designed by Laurent Giles and built by Morris andLatimer in 1955, this 48’ fractional sloop has been the subject of an ongoing restoration and improvement programme that has included a complete rebuild of the transom rudder and steering allowing extra winches to be installed, facilitating the use of higher performance modern race sails, all designed and built by Ultimate Sails.

The Bicentenary International Regatta

From from 25th to the 31st of July, the Royal Yacht Squadron, founded in 1815 celebrated its bicentenary. To mark the occasion, the Squadron hosted an invitational regatta to bring together as many clubs and friends as possible from around the globe, who share their common interests and love of sailing.

The IRC fleet presented a fantastic spectacle, with both vintage classics and modern cutting-edge grand prix race yachts. Entries included the mighty 120ft Briand designed sloop Bristolian, mini-maxi Jethou and many well known names in the performance IRC fleets. From the schooner Eleonora at 160ft to the two 8 metre yachts Helen and Enchantement born 1936 and 1923 respectively, the event proved  magnet for the most immaculate and competitive classics in Europe and beyond. Several, including Dorade herself, are racing across the Atlantic from Newport, Rhode Island, to take part in the regatta.

David Murrin's Cetawayo, powered entirely by Ultimate Sails, enjoyed another hugely sucessful regatta, winning both the Cowes combined Pairs and the International Pairs events in partnership with Giovanni Belgrano's team on Whooper. Cetawayo was also second overall in IRC Class 3.

AAM Cowes Week 2015

We don't like to blow our own trumpet...

Ok... we LOVE to blow our own trumpet when one of the team does well, and this was precisely the case at Cowes Week in August.

Massive congratulations to Ultimate Sails' Technical Director Kevin Sproul and his team who won the fiercley competitive 19 boat J/80 Class on board J.A.T.

The Rolex Fastnet Race 2015

The Rolex Fastnet Race, organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2015, with the 46th edition of this biennial 603-nautical mile offshore classic proving both intriguing and dramatic. A record fleet of 356 yachts from 25 countries competed, a clear demonstration of the event’s enduring appeal. Light conditions characterised the early part of the race, impacting the start from Cowes and the larger yachts chasing record times.

Multihull line honours was claimed by the 131-ft Swiss trimaran Spindrift 2 while the 100-ft Maxi Comanche from the United States was the fastest monohull finisher prevailing ahead of fellow American yacht Rambler by a mere 4 minutes.

In the latter part of the race the fleet’s smaller, predominantly Corinthian-crewed yachts, benefitted from an upturn in breeze rounding the emblematic Fastnet rock in more classic conditions. Claiming overall victory on IRC handicap was the 35-ft French yacht Courrier du Leon, whose magnificent exploits on the water were rewarded with the Fastnet Challenge Trophy and a Rolex timepiece at the final prizegiving held in Plymouth.

The team at Ultimate Sails would like to congratulate every single team that finished the 2015 Rolex Fastnet Race, it's defintely not for the fainthearted or, on this occasion, the impatient! We are especially proud of James Mansell and his crew on board his Sun Odyssey 37 Dreamcatcher who finished the race after 5 days, 1 hour and 9 minutes and who, at the end of their adventure, proudly took to the prize-winner podium to collect the Bloodhound Trophy, presented to the best performing corporate yacht.
